Adventures in Baking: Oreo Truffles

I updated this post for 2010!  See the newest post with newer pics right here: Christmas Candy :: Oreo Truffles!

When you make candy, is that baking?  I guess not technically, but it's not cooking either, and well, I needed a category to put it in, so we're going to call it baking.  Sorry, I'm thinking 'out loud'.

Back on topic..here we go.  Today I wanted to make some more yummy Christmas candy...well, I guess this is candy.  They're called Oreo Truffles.  I was reminded of them when I read a post on Money Saving Mom the other day, but those were a little different from the ones I make.

She used a type of chocolate coating, I use white chocolate, or rather, Almond  Bark.  I guess you could use milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, etc.  Pretty much any coating you'd like would work.  I like the white stuff because of the contrast - the resemblance to an Oreo.  See how moist and yummy and contrasty (I know, I know, not a word) that is...

Anyway, here's how they're made.  Only 3 ingredients.  Here are the first two:

The first step is super easy.  Well, the first first step is to set out the cream cheese and let it get to room temperature.  But that's not the first step I was referring to.  I meant this first step: you stick an entire bag of Oreos in a ziploc bag and beat them to smithereens with a rolling pin or the bottom of a pot or whatever you have on hand.

OR, if you have a food processor, you could do that.  But I'm telling you..if you want to work out alittle stress, use the ziploc and  the rolling pin is the way to go.  Plus, if you have 5 kids and you want them to help out - this is a perfect recipe!

I forgot to take pics of the crumbs and the next step, but you can figure it out - I'm confident that my readers have wild imaginations!   So, you pour your crushed Oreos and the softened cream cheese into a bowl and mix it until you get a mushy, creamy consistency.  It'll be like...well, like smooshed Oreos and cream cheese.   You know, like that?

Next, you scoop out the dough and roll it into small balls...I make mine slightly smaller than an inch.  Very precise, I am.  Except this time.  My kids helped (with their freshly washed hands), so we didn't get the perfect 'just less than inch' size, nor did we even get all balls - but that's okay.  We were all having fun!

We put our balls on cookie sheets lined with waxed paper, then stuck them in the freezer for about 30 minutes.  It makes them much easier to dip later.

Thirty minutes later...the next step is to take your Almond Bark (or milk chocolate, or dark chocolate, or whatever) and melt it in the microwave.  I melted about 4 squares at a time for 1-2 minutes, then whisked it until smooth.

Then, drop your chilled Oreo balls into the mix one at a time and use a fork to turn and coat them; then put them right back on the waxed paper.  With the kids helping, I had one on my right side dropping the balls into the melted Almond bark, then I'd coat and scoop them out, then my daughter would sprinkle them with different Christmas candy sprinkles.

I know these aren't pretty right now..but that's okay.  First off, my kids are having a blast and they'll taste just as delicious, no matter how they look!  OH, and once they're 'decorated', they will be pretty!  I promise!

So, once they're all sprinkled (or not), stick them in the frig for a few more minutes to set.  While mine were setting, I melted some more Almond bark, added red food coloring and put it into a small ziploc bag.  Okay, it was supposed to be red - turned out pink, but oh well, we love all colors!

Get the chocolate down into the one corner of the bag, then snip off the corner (a tiny snip) and  use it like an icing bag - except when you're done - throw it away!  Here's a picture (pretend I'm not in a tank top - my son was supposed to just get my hands).

After filling the bag and snipping off a tiny corner, you can 'pipe' the icing over the top and get more Oreo Truffles decorated like this..

We ended up with about 90 Oreo Truffles (minus the 10 or so that we ate).  These are DELICIOUS!  Trust me, try them, and you'll add them to your 'must haves' for the holidays.  Or any other time of year, for that matter!

I hope you are enjoying this Christmas season and I hope you enjoy these Oreo Truffles!

Merry Christmas!
