Elegant White Wedding Cake

Just over a week ago, sort of at the "last minute" I was asked to do a wedding cake. It's only my second wedding cake order.  The first was my brother's cake last year.

The request was for three tiers, solid white.  She didn't have any preference on decorations, no extra colors or special flavors.

So, I made a white wedding cake.  Simple and elegant.

I made a huge gum paste bow to go on top and wrapped ribbons around the bottoms of the tiers.  Simple.

Oh, and I brushed a little white and silver pearl dust on the bow and ribbons...but it's not all that "visible".  I thought a different background would help, but it didn't.  I think I just didn't add enough to get real sparkle.

I played with  my camera, indoors and out, trying to get the best light, but none of the pictures captured it exactly the way I wanted.  I'm still learning.

For a moment, I considered adding the flowers from the miniature wedding cake, but  took them off again.

I liked it better without them.  Just simple and pretty.

This is a vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream, covered in marshmallow fondant and decorated with a gum paste bow and fondant ribbons.

My MawMaw.... Mary Ella Hawley

My MawMaw went home to be with Jesus last night.  I haven't slept and the tears don't seem to end. 

She was so precious - and I loved her so much.

I'm heartbroken, yet I smile through the tears as I remember...

She made beautiful blankets, hand-stitched.  I sleep under the one she made for me when I got married.  She stitched our initials and wedding date on the hem... I'll treasure it always.

She grew flowers - lots of them.  I remember the four o'clocks for some reason. 

We hid Easter eggs in her flower beds as kids... and ate raw potatoes while she cooked... and she made cobbler with the blackberries we picked.

Everybody loved her - there was no reason not to.

She held my new baby just a month ago.  I'm happy he met her and she held him.

She had her 81st birthday just this month.

She made the very best fried chicken and homemade biscuits on the planet.  No matter how hard I try - I can't get 'em right like she did.

She had 6 children, 15 grandchildren, and more great grand-children than I can count right now.  She adored them all.

I just realized I now have 6 children like she did.  That makes me smile.

I wish I had visited her more and hugged her tighter.  Life is fragile and regret hurts.

I love you MawMaw.

Miniature Wedding Cake {just for fun!}

I have a wedding cake to finish for this weekend. 

 This is not it.  Ha!  This is me playing... with cake!

This is also my second journey with gum paste flowers (here's my first).

Yesterday I actually cooked every drop of moisture out of overcooked one of the layers for the wedding cake, so instead of throwing it to the chickens, I thought I'd just have a little fun.

I made this tiny little wedding cake with some 4 and 5 inch circles of cake cut out of a larger layer with cookie cutters.  It's only about 10 inches tall.

The whole "cut out" part is why the layers and edges aren't terribly smooth.  At least that's the excuse I'm sticking with.  It could be that I'm just still learning.

But then, I was just playing, so it didn't matter.  Those flowers were/are possibly going on the real cake.  I like them a lot. 

They look all hard and complicated, but they were really simple to make.  That's my favorite part!  And pretty... I think they're really pretty!

So anyway.  This is a vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream, covered in marshmallow fondant and decorated with gum paste flowers.

There are NEW Cellfire Coupons available today for Kroger (& affiliates), Safeway & Foodtown customers!  Be sure to sign up or login to Cellfire to add them to your loyalty cards today!  If you haven't ever used Cellfire, it's the easiest way in the world to use coupons.

You simply add the coupons to your loyalty card online, then when you scan your card in the store, the coupon values are automatically deducted on your receipt. 

No paper coupons needed.  If that's not easy enough, you can also stack them with paper coupons and get extra savinigs!  Isn't that neat?
