Rose Bakes... An Airplane Cake, A Smash Cake & Airplane Cookies!

If you're visiting to see my cakes, you can scroll through all of my cakes posts here, visit my cakes page here, and "like" my new Facebook page "Rose Bakes" here.

A couple of weeks ago I got to do a brand new cake design based on airplanes!  This was for Wesson's first birthday and it was so much fun!

First up, the big cake.  It was all vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream, covered with marshmallow fondant.  The clouds were vanilla buttercream too, and I used a large Wilton round tip to pipe them right onto the fondant!  I used cookie cutters for the airplanes... the large one from this Wilton set and also this little cutesy one.

Next up, a smash cake!  This is a trend in caking right now and I just love making the small little matching cakes!

This little airplane smash cake was a 6" vanilla cake filled and frosted with matching blue vanilla buttercream!  The mother of the birthday boy provided me with the matching Airplane "1" candle... but you can get one here (looks like that might be more than one... try here too!).

Lastly, Wesson's Mom wanted matching airplane cookies and she wanted some chocolate at the party (what girl doesn't?)!  So, this is why I made those Brownie Roll-Out cookies a few weeks ago... and I made them again for this party!   They turned out really great!  (these were also cut out with the large cookie cutter from the Wilton set.)

So that's that... another of my many cake adventures!  You can check out all my other cakes and cupcakes here

Rose Bakes... A Pig Smash Cake + Barnyard Cupcakes

If you're visiting to see my cakes, you can scroll through all of my cakes posts here, visit my cakes page here, and "like" my new Facebook page "Rose Bakes" here.

I know I've shown you some cutie-pie Barnyard cupcakes before, but this time when I made them, I got to also make a Pig Smash Cake.  I was soooo happy with the way it turned out!

And I got better pictures this time!  They still aren't perfect, but I'm learning!   The smash cake was vanilla cake filled and frosted with matching pink vanilla buttercream, then covered in pretty pink marshmallow fondant!

The cupcake faces were cut out with the Ateco round cutters and Wilton oval cutters.  I used Ateco markers to make the nose and eyes!

Oh, and of course, mini marshmallows on the sheep!

Rose Bakes... A "10" Cake and Cars Cupcakes

If you're visiting to see my cakes, you can scroll through all of my cakes posts here, visit my cakes page here, and "like" my new Facebook page "Rose Bakes" here.

My second son had a birthday last Sunday and he's now a big 10 years old!   Happy {late}Birthday Caleb!  We had his birthday party this past Friday night and it was fun!

So of course, this post is about the cake.  Side note: my white balance settings were somehow messed up for these pics and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't correct it with Photoshop.  :-(

Caleb requested a cake shaped like a "10" with a race track on top.  I used a Ateco huge icer tip from this Ateco set to make the roads.  It worked really well!  I also sprinked white sparkling sugar onto the black frosting to give it the look of fresh asphalt.

Caleb also requested Brown Sugar frosting (from the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cupcakes) as the main frosting for his cake (the kid has good taste!).  To make the "10", I used my alphabet pan.  The one was vanilla cake, the zero was chocolate cake.

And just so you know, I know I cannot write with buttercream, but in my defense, my kids put their fingers in that writing at least three times and I finally gave up and refused to try and fix it again!

Since it was so small, I also made cupcakes... plus that was a good excuse to by Cars Squinkies!  They are so darned cute and made perfect little cupcake toppers (and party favors for the kiddos)!!

Caleb was thrilled with his cakes and I thought they turned out pretty cute too!

    Rose Bakes... Brownie Roll-Out Cookies {Recipe}

If you're visiting to see my cakes, you can scroll through all of my cakes posts here, visit my cakes page here, and "like" my new Facebook page "Rose Bakes" here.

In a couple of weeks, I'm making an airplane cake and my customer has requested matching airplane cookies.   However, she specifically wanted chocolate cookies.

Well, I have my terrific sugar cookie recipe, and I've read that you can adapt a sugar cookie recipe to a chocolate sugar cookie recipe, but I wanted to go a step farther.   Awhile back I had read about Brownie Roll-Out Cookies, so I wanted to give that recipe a try!

They turned out fantastic!  This dough is perfect for rolling out and cutting into shapes... in my case, airplanes.

For some of the cookies, I used the cookie cutter (this plane came from the Wilton set) to cut out marshmallow fondant planes and "glued" them on the cookies with buttercream.  The decorations for these are very neat and clean...

But since fondant is not always popular, I also tried my hand at decorating with buttercream.  These didn't turn out quite as perfect (visually), but were so delicious with all that vanilla buttercream!

In fact, after tasting the cookie with vanilla buttercream, I was inspired to make some sandwich cookies!

    Mmmm... so good!

I also read that these are perfect for making homemade ice cream sandwiches, and I have to say, I bet that's true!  A tiny scoop of vanilla ice cream pressed between these soft, yet crispy cookies would be heavenly!!   These cookies are a little soft and chewy in the middle, but crisp on the outside!  The chocolate flavor really stands out, and I just love 'em!

    Here's the recipe:

    Brownie Roll-Out Cookies
    3 cups all-purpose flour
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup salted butter, softened (2 sticks)
    1 1/2 cups sugar
    2 large eggs
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa (I used Hershey's)

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt and baking powder and set aside.  In a separate bowl, mix together the softened butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla and cocoa. Gradually add dry mixture to the wet mixture and mix until smooth. Wrap in plastic and chill for at least one hour.  (I skipped the chilling because my child was reading the recipe and he skipped it... my cookies turned out great, but if your dough is sticky, chilling it will help!)

When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350°.  Roll out the chilled cookie dough on floured surface and cut into desired shapes.  You can brush off any extra deposits of flour.  Bake on a parchment-lined cookie sheet for 8 to 11 minutes (the former for 1/8-inch thick cookies, the latter for 1/4-inch cookies).  I rolled mine to 1/4" thickness and 11 minutes was perfect!  When done, the edges are firm and the centers are slightly soft and puffed.  Cool on a wire rack!

I decorated with vanilla buttercream and marshmallow fondant (recipes at links)!
